Nissan create 2000 new jobs, giving the motor industry a massive boost in theUK. Japanese manufacturer Nissan has announced plans to invest £125m in building a new model at its plant inSunderland. The car is a small hatchback bringing more competition to VW and Ford.
This has come as a welcome surprise, with the recent year showing a number of redundancies in the industry from leading manufacturers. The project has also been backed by the government offering £9.3m in grants from the £2.4bn Regional Growth Fund.
Business secretary Vince Cable Mr Cable said:
"It is fantastic news that Nissan will be building the new model inSunderland. The investment is a boost for jobs at Nissan's plant as well as the wider supply chain.
"This latest announcement highlights theUK's track record of attracting inward investment. Global vehicle manufacturers are beating a path to theUK's door."
The new project has come from the success of the Qashqai, which was the tenth best selling car in theUKin 2010, the first time Nissan have made the top ten since the Sunny in 1983.
